During the modernization of the Southampton Tunnel in London, RAILONE took over the independent plan review of the engineering firm MS Atkins. In addition to the narrow cross-sections of a tunnel that is about 100 years old, the transition areas to the adjacent ballasted track and the integration of the third rail into the RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system presented particular challenges. Special prefabricated concrete parts were developed for this purpose to accommodate the third rail fastening. The background to the modernization was the extension of the existing line to accommodate larger vehicles, which made it necessary to lower the gradient of the tunnel to increase the clearance. For this reason, the planning was realized in a ballastless track with the low-profile RHEDA 2000® system. Our planning services were rounded off by quality monitoring of the construction work on site.
