Tampere, Finland: RHEDA CITY in the third biggest city of Finland

In November 2016, the Tampere City Council approved the construction of the first standard-gauge tram line in Finland with a length of 17.6 km. Tampere is located 160 km north of Helsinki. To create a modern infrastructure, the city of Tampere, with a population of 240,000, has introduced a light rail system. The project aims to provide better transportation for commuters by improving connectivity and service to all major destinations in Tampere. The Construction of Phase A began in 2016 and was opened to traffic in August 2021. In addition to the challenge of building track systems in urban areas, in combination with damping mats to reduce vibrations, the climatic conditions also presented a demanding task.

Project details:

  • Length of the line: 12,700 m
  • max. speed of 80 km/h
  • Project duration: 2016 to 2021
  • Supply of 13,200 two-block sleepers.
  • Support from RAILONE for supervision of track installation and construction work.
