Rapur, Andra Pradesh, India: RHEDA 2000® in tunnel


The Rapur Tunnel is located in the southeast of India near Chennai. The single-track tunnel runs through the mountain ranges of the East Ghats. The aim of the tunnel construction is to significantly improve the logistics for the extensive cargo handling from the important port of Krishnapatnam. The implemented project reduces the length of the transport line by around 80 km. This leads to a considerable reduction in freight costs, which enables business companies and the government to save around ten million euros per week. The RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system is characterized, among other things, by its flexibility in adapting to switches, tunnels, bridges or embankments and its enormous cost-effectiveness due to the possibility of using locally available materials. The sleepers are supplied from the PCM RAILONE Group production plant in Jalpaiguri. RAILONE engineers supervise and accompany the project from the planning phase to completion.

  • The project started on 15 November 2018 and was completed in August 2019
  • The total length of the tunnel is 6.5 km
  • The scope of supply includes 12,500 RHEDA 2000® bi-block sleepers
  • The axle load applied on the line is 22.5 tons
