Athens, Greece: Delivery of RHEDA 2000® for modernization of the metro system in the Greek capital

Thanks to its ultra-modern metro system, the Greek capital Athens is meeting the constantly growing traffic volume. The subway there consists of three lines with a considerable total length of approx. 55 km. Historically and archaeologically protected areas and centuries-old buildings are characteristic for the route. For the team on site, these framework conditions present great challenges during the construction phase and for the operation thereafter. RAILONE’s RHEDA 2000® system was chosen in time to modernize the most frequently used line connecting the center with the ancient port of Piraeus.

Project details:

  • Construction work was completed 2011 after the start of construction in 2009
  • In this project, a team of RAILONE engineers is responsible for consulting and detailed design
  • The length of the modernized line is 34.5 km
  • The flexible RHEDA 2000® ballastless track system allows the use of modified designs to reduce noise and vibration
  • RHEDA 2000® without reinforcement is installed here for the first time and thus increases the efficient use of the applied resources
